Museums
 

Air Force Space & Missile Museum: 449-4444. Focuses primarily on the early unmanned space program, with artifacts from the ’50s and ’60s and a rocket garden. The only way to visit the museum is through Cape Canaveral Then and Now bus tours from Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Visitor Complex hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. during winter. Closing hours vary at other times of the year.

Alma Clyde Field Library of Florida History: 435 Brevard Ave., Cocoa Village, 690-1971. Runs in conjunction with the Florida Historical Society. Research library includes exhibits of Florida history and historical documents. Book and gift shop. Hours: 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

American Police Hall of Fame and Museum: 6350 Horizon Drive, Titusville, 264-0911. 50,000-square-foot facility allows visitors to sit in an electric chair, lie under a guillotine, sit on a police motorcycle, shoot an actual police weapon and fly 130 mph in a helicopter. Facility also has a state of the art indoor shooting center. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily except for Christmas and Thanksgiving.

Astronaut Hall of Fame: 6225 Vectorspace Blvd., Titusville, 269-6101.World’s largest collection of personal astronaut memorabilia. Dedicated to Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space programs. Also features historic spacecraft and simulator rides. KSC is off SR 405 in the Titusville area. Astronaut Hall of Fame is on SR 405 five miles south of the KSC Visitor Complex off site and open 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m

Brevard Museum of Art and Science: 1463 Highland Ave., Melbourne, 242-0737. The county’s only fine arts museum has five galleries where rotating exhibitions by international, national and regional artists are displayed. The museum is also host to cultural lecture series, a book club, jazz performances, children’s activities and art classes. The Ruth Cote Clemente Science Center has colorful, hands-on exhibits for children. The Renee Foosaner Education Center offers studio classes.

Brevard Museum of History and Science: 2201 Michigan Ave., Cocoa, 632-1830. Collecting museum also brings in traveling shows with accompanying text panels. On permanent display are a Florida timeline, a nature center with 22 acres of trails and a recreation of the famous Windover Dig, which unearthed 7,000-year-old remains of prehistoric man.

Brevard Veterans Memorial Museum: Veterans Memorial Center, 400 S. Sykes Creek Parkway, Merritt Island, 453-1776  Education museum houses artifacts from all wars in which the United States has fought, from swords and cannon balls to World War II rationing stamps and V-mail and much more. Exhibits are rotated to provide new displays.

East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame Museum: in Ron Jon Watersports, 4275 N. Atlantic Ave., Cocoa Beach, 784-3005, e-mail to surfscout71@aol.com or visit www.ecsurfinghallandmuseum.org. Exhibits presents history of surfing through old surfboards, magazines and photos, surf music, collections of old items related to surfing and exhibits about national surf champions Kelly Slater, the late Bruce Valuzzi and inductees into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame. There’s also a small theater that shows old surf movies.

The Enchanted Forest - Located on the north side of State Route 405, 1/2 mile west of U.S. Route 1, in south Titusville. You will descend 15 to 20 feet from the desert-like Scrub on the ancient Atlantic Coastal Ridge into the shadowy, moist Mesic Hammock with its huge canopy. The interrelationship of elevation, soil, water, nutrients, and botany becomes evident.

Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Memorial Park - 2180 Freedom Avenue, Mims 32754 Phone: 321-264-6595, Fax: 321-264-6596 Opened on April 9, 2004, the 5,000 sq ft Cultural Center is located on the property of the original Moore family home site and is universally accessible. Dedicated to preserving African American history, it is a repository of Moore family artifacts, historical documents, and currently features a timeline of strategic events of the pre-civil rights era beginning with slavery.

Historic Rossetter House: 1320 Highland Ave., Melbourne, 254-9855 Botanical gardens and house museum circa 1930. Large collection of antiques. Explores history of Eau Gallie and the Rossetter Family, social and business leaders in the area during the 20th century. Gardens available for weddings.

Liberty Bell Memorial Museum - 1601 Oak St., Melbourne, 727-1776 Run by Honor America. Contains artifacts and facsimiles from important moments in U.S. history, such as the Dec laration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and a full-size replica of the Liberty Bell. Permanent exhibits range from Revolutionary War period to Operation Iraq. Hosts military concerts and presents patriotic events.

North Brevard Historical Museum - 301 S. Washington Ave., Titusville, 269-3658. Operated by the Historical Society of North Brevard. Houses historic items dating from 1890 to the 1980’s.

Two Feathers Gallery Museum: 833 E. New Haven Ave., Melbourne, 733-1227. Collection of American Indian jewelry and artifacts, Western artifacts, and cultural and spiritual myths and practices.

U.S. Space Walk of Fame Museum: Searstown Mall, 3550 S. Washington Ave., Titusville, 264-0434 or visit www.spacewalkoffame.com. Nonprofit museum established by space workers in December 2001. On display are rare photos, space patches, pins, space hardware, flight suits, shuttle tiles, bronzed handprints of Mercury, Gemini and Apollo astronauts, and numerous scale models of aerospace vehicles and facilities.

Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum: 6600 Tico Road, Space Coast Regional Airport, Titusville, 268-1941 or visit www.vacwarbirds.org. Walk around a 30,000-square-foot hangar and see warplanes from before World War II, a C-47 from the D-Day invasion, a restored Wildcat from the bottom of Lake Michigan and a present-day F-14.

Eastern Florida Planetarium and Observatory - World-class planetarium that has seating for 210 under a 70-foot dome projection screen. Two star projectors team up to produce a stunningly realistic sky and 3D computer effects.
